Shoot in the shade or early in the morning, or later in the evening.
We spent a fair amount of time at the beach this summer. The light is much less harsh in the morning or evenings and the bonus is there are less people hanging around the beach during those times.
Choose your lens before you hit the beach.
I promise, I’m only thinking of you! You do not want to be changing your lens around all of that sand! That’s just an accident waiting to happen.
Shoot from above.
This takes care of the people around you that you may not want in your photographs, and makes it possible to create a less distracting image ( if you’re looking for more ways to eliminate clutter in your photos, check this post out). It’s just a cool perspective. Be sure to watch your shadow, unless you’re hoping to get it in the picture!
Sit back and watch.
Take pictures when no one thinks you’re looking. The lifestyle candid portraits can make some of the best shots. When you taking shots like this, and you’re not focusing on capturing images directed at the face, the harsh shadows from midday sun become less of an issue. And, you can get images of those amazing blue skies!
Use a gopro or a waterproof case for your phone.
Being able to take pictures in the water is so much fun, and let’s you capture a totally different aspect of your time at the beach. We are total beach bums, and that includes spending time in the water and waves. I am completely obsessed with my gopro, and I can’t tell you how much I love being able to use my phone to capture our lives.
Look for grass or trees.
I tend to stick to natural things just because that’s part of the draw to the beach for me, adding these things to your images can add texture to your shots.
Get REALLY low!
But, try to avoid having the horizon “cut through” your subject’s head though, and make sure it’s straight!
Use the camera you have!
Nothing says you must have a DSLR to create amazing pictures at the beach! It is possible to get amazing images with your phone (for more tips on how to take better pictures with your phone, check this post out) or a point and shoot (for more tips on how to take better pictures with a point and shoot camera, check this post out).
I hope these tips help you take some super cool beach pictures! Now, it’s your turn– What’s your favorite tip for taking pictures at the beach?? leave me a comment– I love hearing from you all!
